THE DVD IS COMING...

Not until April of '07, but tvshowsondvd says Season 1 will be available at that time. No further information as to whether it will include the pilot movie or not.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

cool. There's an online archive for the series (go to google to find it) that is quite extensive, lots of pictures, press stuff, high resolution photos from each episode in year 1.

I'd buy this dvd (and I don't buy many). I watched the show in reruns from season 3 onward, but would really enjoy seeing the first year stories. Quincy Jones acted in one of them as did Susan St James (twice- I guess she was a Universal contract player at the time)and various others who went on to greater fame.

The Mark character was somewhat groundbreaking as there were very few Negroes in regular roles in 1967 and there were several season one shows centering on his character. His hair got progressively bigger in each season- kind of a good way to mark which season you're watching is to see how big his afro was at the time.

I think Don Mitchell is terrific as Mark Sanger and a very important character. Most television characters seem to be etched in stone, what they were on the first episode they will be on the last, but not Mr. Sanger. Mark grew from a troubled teen to a young man dealing with the social problems of his times, a law student, a cop, a married man. Lovely to watch and very well played.

Shout! Factory is releasing season 1 at the end of April, under license from Universal, so forget all of those bootlegs found on the internet; this is the real deal with the pilot movie included. Here's the link to the Shout! Factory press release:

If you buy "Ironside" from anyone but Shout! Factory, you've bought a bootleg; buyer beware.

The dvds are great, but in watching this it is obvious that the producers of House ripped off this show- crippled sleuth genius with a bad disposition, three supporting staff- black male from a tough background, attractive, cultured white female and white guy, by the books boss who is made to look stupid repeatedly for adhering to the rules, the lead is married to his job etc etc. The House character is more outrageous and says and does socially inappropriate/obnoxious things- but Ironside was pretty nasty for his era. The Eve and Mark characters might be considered offensive stereotypes to some, but they were progressive for 1967 (Mark in particular was a breath of fresh air for 1960s tv). Give me this show over House any time.

I dig.
