Season 2 'Price Tag Death' (Infamous Extra)

If you watch carefully a young OJ Simpson can be seen as an extra in the episode "Price Tag Death". When Ironside arrives at the crime scene early in the episode look at the bystanders standing in the background. Don Mitchell (Mark Sanger) stands right next to him for a bit. You can't miss him.

I haven't seen all the DVD episodes yet but season 2 is turning out to be as good as the first.

Really? That's one of my favourite episodes. Clu Gulager and Ralph Meeker are perfect in their roles. Can't say I recall checking out the extras at the crime scene. Will have to do that when I get the set.

I noticed that also and i couldn't believe it. honestly, season 2 is not as good. the writing is bad and alot of time is wasted on long shots, flasbacks and banal converations.

I feel the opposite- year 2 is more interesting than year 1 to me. Maybe they got past the preliminaries of having to set up the characters and got more into showing the characters in different situations (eg: Mark's stories are not just about race issues, Eve has a romance, we get to see her join the force, 2 episodes about abortion etc). With the good cleaned up quality of the DVDs these eps are better viewing than the current shows and are not as dated as some other series from that era. Haven't seen this past year 2 in many a moon but from what I remember the quality never waivered really. Amazing for a show that ran as long as it did. And the scenery really makes the show.

I agree. I've seen the whole season 2 DVD set now and I think it's as good as the first season dialogue and all.

Just one episode in the season 2 DVD set was recorded in faster than normal speed as far as I know. Almost half of the first season DVD set was recorded too fast. The voices were obviously high pitched. It really brought down the first set IMO.

Nic hse: I had an extensive discussion during a call-back from one of the top brass at the Shout Factory regarding the transfer method they employed to produce their then soon to be released first season of Ironside on DVD and learned that they do not have the budget for digital remastering for any of the series in their rather extensive catalog. What they do is obtain official licensing from the production house that owns the rights to whatever TV series they desire to release which gives them access to the original film negatives from which they produce fresh virgin prints. Those in turn are used to create the masters they produce the DVDs from. For many years now I have noticed the slightly compressed audio quality of the actors' voices in that one episode you cite, but not on any of the others of the second season (and this has remained consistent on my particular set of copies of the DVDs). Universal's sound labs or the sound technician at the time of that one episode's production are responsible for the glitch. As to the rest, the facilities Shout contracts with to mass-produce the copies of the DVDs from the masters may have had a faulty machine for the production run your particular set came from. You might find it useful to locate Shout's contact info on their website (i.e. shoutfactory.com) and let them know of the situation.

Thanks for the info. I have seen similar complaints from other buyers of season one on Amazon.com. I'll contact them.

I also noticed O.J.in the crowd at the crime scene, but only after reading about it on here and then watching the DVD. There are three other curious things about this episode. First, the Ralph Meeker character is never addressed by name and his name is never revealed. Second, the Clu Gulager character uses three different names at various times in the episode. And finally, since the character dies at the end we never find out why he bought so many bags of groceries and then threw them away. Does anyone have any thoughts on any of this?

reply

Culager's character was buying the groceries with the phoney checks from the stolen printer to get money. He'd make out the check for more than the grocery amount and the store would give him the excess.

Strangely enough, I just happened to watch that episode again tonight and noticed OJ for the first time.

With guest stars like Ralph Meeker and Clu Gulager (not to mention Peggy Ann Garner), and some cracking dialogue and situations, it's one of my favorites.
