Have there ever been any real life wheelchair-bound detectives?

Was Ironsides character based on a real life detective?
I mean even back in the 60's & 70's when the show was filmed it wouldnt have been realistic for any police dept. to have a detective who was confined to a wheelchair

If you do not mind me saying so,as a wheelchair user I just wanted to say that we prefer the term "wheelchair user" to "wheelchair bound" or "confined to a wheelchair". This isn't Political Correctness,it is just that wheelchairs are positive aids in our life that enable us to get around and that the latter two terms have a negative connontation.

Chief Ironside's relationship with the SFPD was unconventional, but none-the-less believable--even for that time. No longer his employer, (he was retired after being disabled), he instead worked out of the president of the police commission's office as a private consultant.
