How does Ironside have a working phone inside of his paddy wagon?

They had car phones then. It was not something the public at large had. Government, rich people had them. Watch some old movies.

Car phones were around long before Ironside premiered. Calls were placed through a mobile operator.

Right -- Paul Drake had one on Perry Mason - 1957-1966 too -- and Perry White had one on Superman (the series with George Reeves)
