Yes, at the beginning of season 6 Mark Sanger has graduated law school and the Chief thinking Mark will become a lawyer and not be there to drive him anymore has the van rigged so that he can drive it himself and in one early season 6 episode they show him going to renew his driver's license. He has to take the test a few times before finally passing. That episode was "Down a Few Roads", season 6, ep. 4.
But Mark decides that instead of becoming a lawyer, he wants to be a police officer. He goes to the police academy and becomes a uniformed officer. At first he has other duties, foot patrol / traffic duty, that keep him busy and he still can't be there to drive the chief. After a while Officer Mark Sanger is put back on permanent duty as a member of Ironside's team, but as a policeman now, not a civilian like he was in the first 5 seasons.

I think the scene when the Chief tried to pass the driving test was quite amusing.
The reaction of the testing officer when he got in the van and found the the Chief in the driver seat. The statement from the Chief when he failed the driving test that "I'll be back", and Ed's reaction when the Chief told him that he was going to drive home and then almost rear-ended a car at the next intersection.
