FYI: "Ironside" ran for a consistent eight seasons on American Television, and it ran on the NBC-TV network from September of 1967 until the final episode of the series in April of 1975. The series produced an astounding 199 episodes and it was also Emmy nominated three times including two for Best Actor(Raymond Burr),Best Supporting Actor in TV Series(Don Galloway),Best Supporting Actress in a TV series(Barbara Anderson in 1970,and Elizabeth Baur in 1973),and also for
Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series(Don Mitchell). However it won the Emmy and the Grammy for Best Musical Score in a TV-Series(composer Quincy Jones).
*This was Raymond Burr's second most successful show after playing America's favorite lawyer for almost a decade as Perry Mason(CBS,1957-1966). This show would last eight years on the air and when it was cancelled by NBC in the Spring of 1975,it left the air without a sound. The show was still in the top ten of the Nielsens when it was cancelled. "Ironside",was the first detective series in the history of television where you saw a handicapped person overcome his disabilities to solve crimes and also with the help of the police department to capture the suspects and there was no other actor better than Raymond Burr, who pulled this off brilliantly.
Was filmed on location in San Francisco and in some parts on the backlot of Universal City Studios in Hollywood. Great Technicolor photography!!!!
The acting was first rate, and you got to see a lot of guest stars that were on this show as well, including one episode I do recall that featured Motown legend
Marvin Gaye, making his acting debut in a rarely seen, but classic 1971 episode.
This show also tackled the issues of the day including civil rights, women's rights, politics, and other things of important interest including an episode that dealt with the Vietnam War. "Ironside" was that show.
The show was on Thursday nights opposite another successful crime drama show as well,"Hawaii Five-O" which was on CBS and starred Jack Lord, and was proceeded by the action-adventure show "Daniel Boone",which starred Fess Parker, and also "The Dean Martin Show".
It is a crying shame that Universal(the studio that produced the show, under Raymond Burr's production company,Harbour-UTV Productions)does not have this series out on DVD. However,Universal does have the complete first seasons of
"Baretta","Kojak","Columbo","Macmillan And Wife","McCloud","Quincy,ME"
"The Rockford Files","Mangum,PI",and "The A-Team",which are all out on DVD!
Also included on DVD are the Universal-produced Mark VII-Jack Webb shows as well
out on DVD. Did you know that the "Adam-12",and "Emergency",and "O'Hara-US Treasury",along with the first season episodes of the color versions of "Dragnet:1967",are out on DVD!!! "Ironside" deserves to the respected and needs to be out on DVD!!!Make it happened!!!
TRIVIA: Actress Barbara Anderson was nominated for a Emmy in 1970 for an dramatic episode of "Ironside",but unfortunately lost to actress Gail Fisher of "Mannix" for the title of Best Supporting Actress in a TV-Series.
I agree, that show needs to be more respected. And it needs to be released on DVD!!!
"SG"
I agree that NBC shouldn't have cancelled it abruptly. I have heard that Raymond Burr was getting tired of playing Ironside, and since his production company was behind the series, maybe he helped the series to end early. If he had lived, instead of dying of cancer in 1993, there were plans to do more Ironside movies, if the one that was made was sucessful. Unfortunately, Raymond Burr postponed cancer treatment to make "Return of Ironside". Sounds a little like Ironside, who didn't want to get treatment when needed.
shareI just had to note that Barbara Anderson was nominated three times for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Drama in 1968, 1969 and 1970, and she did indeed win in 1968.
shareIt makes me wonder why she didn't continue in acting, if she was so talented. I know she was on "Mission Impossible" after "Ironside", but then retired from acting to raise a family. I wish that she was more accessible for fans, since Elizabeth Baur and she are the only main cast members still alive from "Ironside". With the 50th anniversary coming in 2017, it would be nice to see both of the women appear in interviews.
shareThe best thing about this show was the location filming. This show wasn't caged in and locked down on a studio lot. Lots of really interesting sights all throughout the show's run made this show quite interesting to look at. The music was good too.
