It seemed in Threshold of Courage that she might be pregnant because she went to the chapel to say a novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe that made all the men look very knowing. Manolito said, "So there will be a child in your house, Victoria?," urging her to be careful, and to himself, "I might be an uncle." The fact that she was then kidnapped might have meant she miscarried early on.
I recently watched all season one and part of season two online and I kept waiting for the "big reveal" where we learn they had made their marriage "real," thinking perhaps it would be the last episode in season one but all I was able to find was this subtle reference that didn't seem to bear fruit, as it were. She was certainly trying hard enough, bathing right in front of John and all.
(The most interesting bathing scene so far was Buck with one leg hitched up over the side of the bathtub and his friend Oscar sitting in a chair at the end of the tub talking with him, even needing to push Buck's soapy foot away from his face, in Tornado Frances. I wonder whose little joke that was. It also had a big splashy finale, which could have gone all wrong. I wonder what the outtakes were like....)
I thought John's maturity and stolid nature was a good balance for her youth and emotional nature. Hunkiness is in the eye of the beholder. I thought he was a realistic older but energetic man. He was well educated, had manners and self control, and could make the hard decisions. He was protective toward his family and employees, and could be persuaded to extend his protection to others even if it got him into trouble. He respected people who were not like him. He had character. That appeals to a lot of women. He wasn't good at showing his emotions but that would have been more the rule than the exception in his era. He made all the other men look like callow youth.
I don't know where you would have found a woman as beautiful as Victoria back then but there were probably a lot of men who looked something like John, not a model or a body builder, just a guy with a reasonable amount of muscle tone when he took his shirt off, the proverbial snow on the roof but fire in the furnace. I like that about him. A person might someday run across a man like John. I don't think I'll ever meet anyone like Victoria.
