Looking for a 'hippie' episode...

I remember a bit of one episode with this hippie couple towards the end, talking to each other and saying stuff like "Saaaaadie, what do you seeee?" They both had long hair and looked like cartoony, Halloween-costume hippies.

It was just wonderfully ridiculous and I'd love to see it again - anyone know what episode I'm remembering?

THANK you! That was driving me nuts.

Is that the episode with Gary Crosby who meets Joe and Bill in the mausoleum? He started out as a hippie writer with a thermos of coffee, then by the end of the show took a shower, got a haircut, and sold out to "the man" by writing screenplays.

Apparently the only way a hippie could redeem themselves in the Dragnet universe was to quit being a hippie. Even a benevolent one like Crosby needed a major overhaul to become a good citizen again.

so I guess Dragnet really did mirror society?
(benevolence alone rarely means a person is accepted as a productive or valued member of the community. A job, a haircut and a bath are usually a good start)

I know you are but what am I?

Well, unfortunately quite often even people who play by society's rules, conform and walk in lock step still end up with nothing. Being accepted by the majority isn't always possible or even important. Lot's of things a person has no control over (race, ecnonomic backround, no access to education) can cripple your chance at success before you even start. And lot's of people who appear to be upright and respectable are some of the worse parasites on everyone else. So I think benevolence and kindness are a more important factor than how long a person's hair is or how stylishly they dress. Over the last few years we've seen how no matter how hard a person tries, the deck can be stacked against you and peg you for the bottom. So like Bob Dylan said: "If you have nothing, you have nothing to lose". And cconformity to a sick society isn't a measure of good health.
