I wonder if he was gay. He wasn't married. You never saw him date girls. Whenever Gannon brought up dating/getting married he always tried to change the subject. As a policeman, being gay would never have been accepted. When I watch, that's the impression I get.
Well being gay is not exactly a modern day preference. People have been gay since the beginning of time. It just wasn't talked about as much as it is these days and people weren't so open with their sexuality, which is what caused me to bring it up because in the late 60's as a policeman, Friday wouldn't have brought it up. But I respect your opinion and don't want to get into any argument over it. It's not that important. Have a nice day!
Even as far back as the radio show, Dragnet (1949-1957), Joe Friday did date occasionally. In the '50s series (1951-1959), he had several girlfriends and even a fiancee for a time.
If you want to see Friday finally "get the girl", checkout my Dragnet stories, if interested. http://webspace.webring.com/people/xk/kayen78/ Scroll the page to the drop menu labled "Dragnet."
I'll quote that Emergeny Episode Pulblity Hound when they got that flase alarm and John Gage says, "Man they oughta find out who turns in those false alarms and shoot them."
They should do the same to those who ask such dumb questions.
As several have written, just because someone is not married does NOT mean they are homosexual. There was an episode of "Dragnet" where they busted an illegal casino. Friday was taken with a female character played by Chanin Hale. I would have been also. Very attractive and well built. If you really pay close attention, you should be able to feel and see Friday's desire for her. Case in point. A homosexual would not act the way he did... I rest my case.
No Friday wasn't gay. Not that it would make any difference anyway. He seemed sort of asexual. Like female companionship was unimportant to him. But then again he did occasionally hang with Policewoman Dorothy Miller. How far that went, who knows? She was hot in that uniform though. It was obvious she had eyes for Joe, but did he reciprocate the feeling? Maybe.
Roba1955- YES!!! In that gambling ring episode Friday was obviously enamored with the girl he ultimately busted (in a sense anyway). And he felt remorse for doing it, even though she got off light. Sure he wanted to bang her. What straight man wouldn't? It showed he did have those human feelings after all.
I think it was just the Friday "image". No women, no fun, no emotions. Nose to the grindstone. Work 24/7. I work as a cop, I live as a cop, I eat and sleep as a cop. Actually, except for the fact that he was married in real life (at one point, anyways), Jack Webb was very much the same. Everyone from Harry Morgan to Julie London (his ex) mentioned how he was mega-serious when it came to work. He reportedly also had an apartment on the studio lot so he didn't have to "waste his time" commuting back and forth to work and could spend more hours working. That, and the 3-4 packs of Camels a day, probably attributed to his early (62) death.
Haha! Obviously sarcasm is hard to convey around here. Maybe I shoulda prefaced my previous post with @hashtag? It's OK, I lived with my mother from birth to age 18! "May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
