Calvin Lampe (Burt Mustin) made Joe and Bill look like rookie cops on their first case. He had all the clues analyzed correctly and told the boys just who to look for. If only they had listened.

Chief Lampe may have been the greatest detective of all time. Joe and Bill were fortunate to have been in his presence for awhile. He taught them a lot.

If Joe and Bill had listened to Chief Lampe, they would have caught those murderers before the first commercial break!

For awhile he was a red herring. They suspected him at first, and rightly so. He was acting suspicious and a little too familiar with what was happening. It was a good story. The same old dude played "the world's oldest cat burglar" in another episode. Now there he WAS guilty.
