Too jaded for 2014?

Do you think Dragnet 2014 would be successful? My guess is no because the changes they would make to "modernize" it would ruin what's so good about it. i like that it's not the least bit hip. I like the fact that it can be corny and it doesn't apologize for it.

A new DRAGNET would have to operate in a world of CSIs, NCIS', CRIMINAL MINDS, LAW & ORDERS, et al. All "realistic" police procedurals can be said to have sprung from DRAGNET (and the much lesser-known GANGBUSTERS), but a modern DRAGNET would have to include much more graphic crimes, more violence (how often did Friday or Gannon use their weapons? Or wrestle/punch/tackle any suspects?) and Friday and the supporting characters would have to be more human. There would have to be back stories and relationships and phobias and neuroses. Stories would have to become more character-driven, less plot-driven, because that's what modern audiences expect.

Yep. They tried to bring it back in 2003. First season did okay, but the second season it was turned into just another ensemble crime drama. It was canceled after five episodes. The first season was faithful to the original format - though the crimes were more brutal and so on.
