Lyle Waggoner

I thought that Lyle Waggoner was on more often. I have been watching on METV and he has not appeared on any.

He's only in the early ones, Later on Tim Conway replaces him.

The cast always kinda acts as though Waggoner never existed, he wasn't even on the final show.

Also PLEASE be on the look out for that sketch I'm looking for, if MeTV shows season 11, they might just play it. If you see it please write me with details.

All the episodes they've shown so far since MeTV started airing it a few weeks ago are from season 10. Season 10 aired from 76-77. Lyle Waggoner had left the show in 1974 at the end of season 7 and not long after got the role in the Wonder Woman pilot movie which aired in 1975 and then the series which started in 1976.

When these episode of Carol Burnett that have been recently airing on MeTV were first aired he was doing the first season of Wonder Woman.

Anyone remember the Golden Girls episode with Lyle Waggoner and Sonny Bono? Lol

The Golden Girls episode where Dorothy dreams that Sonny Bono and Lyle Waggoner are in love with her is definitely one of the funniest of the series, in my opinion. I never tire of seeing that in reruns of the show.

I just saw that starting tonight (02-09-15) they are going back to the early season 6 episodes so they should have Lyle Waggoner in some of the upcoming episodes.

So far all the episodes that had been shown since the show came to MeTV at the beginning of the year were all from season 10.

Tonight is season 6, episode 4 from October 4th, 1972, tomorrow is season 6, episode 6 from October 18th, 1972.

They're showing the early 70's episodes with Lyle Waggoner now on ME TV.

In addition to these other reasons remember that all the Carol Burnette episodes being shown on MeTV are edited down from 1 hour to 30 minutes thus cutting out a lot of sketch material that would have otherwise had Waggoner (and others) in it. I noticed that he appeared in 184 episodes out of 279. It had always seemed to me that he had left earlier

reply

This. The half-hour format favors Tim sketches. It seems Lyle was never a major player by comparison, but I'm sure he had bigger roles in many musical segments that the half-hour format does not feature.

He did but didn't leave earlier. Burnett was quite smitten with him at first, and not for professional reasons. But as that faded, she began to see that, while game, good looking and professional, he was hardly the ultimate comedian.

So, it was decided that he would cease to be a star of the show, especially when Conway became a regular. They report this was amicable, and Waggoner did continue to play straight parts and was actually the show's announcer for a time. But then he landed Wonder Woman and concentrated on that.

You don't see a great deal of him on Carol Burnett and Friends because that syndication package draws footage from none of the episodes from the first five seasons.

reply

Thanks for the "inside scoop". He just went to a more "behind the scenes"/less screen time role

It didn't happen that way. He decided to leave; he was not asked to leave so Conway could replace him. If you recall, Dick Van Dyke followed Lyle before Conway came on board. Lyle did serve a purpose on the show, and in retrospect, they know he was valuable.
