Other Albee plays

The only other Edward Albee play that I've seen or read is A Delicate Balance (the film version with Paul Scofield). It seemed like a rather lifeless copy of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Has anybody seen live performances (or read) any of Albee's more recent works? How do they compare?

A Zoo Story is a quick read.

What i did was I went to a library & picked up one of the "Edward Albee Collections" & just breezed thru.
No doubt yu wont find another V-Woolf. His style is remarkably diff in that play & bo matter what when yu read it the Burtons r in yur head so that adds more life the drearer cast of Delicate Balance. Tho yu cant deny hepburns amazing in all she does, that play drags on in a manner V-woolf didnt.

What albee brought to literature was alot like Williams, a profound appreciation for words and a constant desire to explore human relationships. But Albee was a minimalist. His plays always have limited stage direction, props and actions. All is described thru his dialogue. Some of yur fav things of his cld be ones he never did much with. Thats what im like with Williams.

Sorry for such a late reply. I saw "The Goat or Who is Sylvia?" on Broadway a while back - with Bill Pullman - and it was similar in that it was about a VERY dysfunctional family.

Similar humor- I think THE GOAT was much much funnier - maybe because it was a little less depressing than WAOVW.

Although both plays are amazing- they're just different. Lots of laughs in both. Both very, very strong pieces of work. I never got to see WAOVW on stage, and I bet that would've been the best way to see it. Even though I love the film.

I've heard about The Goat, wasn't there a bad Woody Allen movie with the same premise?

reply

Maybe. I'm not sure... I'd have to look up Woody's movies (and woody's done like a TON of movies!)...

But THE GOAT was a great Broadway play that actually won the TONY for best play that year (early 2000's)...

I saw The Zoo Story at a book fair in south Florida in the early 1990s. I think that was the first real play I had ever seen, and I was blown away by the dialog and the acting. I wish I could remember who played the leads! Super good, see it if you can.
