Wow, so she was only 34

So, Liz Taylor was only 33 or 34 when this movie was made but she looked so old and scary. Was that how she was really looking like at the time or was it mostly makeup, do you think she aged well? Elizabeth Taylor, not the character that is..In Cleopatra she was looking amazing at 30...

reply

I had the same thought! She looked terrible, but I couldn't decide if that was how she really looked.. or if they were making her look that way.

reply

She was supposed to look that way. That's why she put on the extra weight.

"Martha is 108... years old. She weighs somewhat more than that". - George

reply

She gained weight, they put grey in her hair and it's called ACTING people. God people are stupid, who is asking these questions? 12 year olds?

It's possible. If there are younger people who have discovered this movie and other movies featuring Elizabeth Taylor, then I really don't mind them asking questions. They weren't around when this film came out. They never heard or read all of the hoopla over her wieght gain for this film. It's good to ask questions if you're interested but don't know the answer. I don't always know the actors who are hot these days. I'm happy to ask the 12 year old kids questions
Be glad that young people actually watch these movies

Fasten your seatbelts.... It's going to be a bumpy night!

reply

Thank you, I had no idea. Yes, I know she is acting but her physical change was dramatic. That is why I asked the questions I had asked. I am younger so I had no idea about what Liz Taylor was going through during those years..Thank you to those who understood

reply

then they should be well-versed in the ways of 'google' to find out what people looked like at a certain age, ie actors.

i think it is more because it is liz taylor and there are those who just don't get what a fine, fine actress she was. 'cat on a hot tin roof' and 'suddenly last summer' are good examples of her in her so-called prime. she was better than many give her credit for. one poster here thinks she was only 'being herself' as martha. that is insulting to both her and the viewing public.

gosh, you must be a hoot at parties...

reply

more accurately, an a-hole at parties

reply

I think her hard living lifestyle was catching up to her as well. Further, Burton, does not look 40, those lines are not makeup - he looks almost 50 and booze will do that to you.

reply

were you there, partying with her?? you know this from other than tabloid fodder? burton had a drinking problem. as for liz, what part of 'pretend' don't you get? she was a superb actress, gained a lot of weight for this role and wasn't afraid to look older and worn out.

just as make up can make a person beautiful, it can do the opposite.

@Hoohawnaynay: Your insulting post is completely inappropriate and unnecessary.

Saying God people are stupid on an internet message board says FAR more about YOU than anyone else. Lighten up buddy. Not everyone is as brilliant as you are, and sometimes humans may ask questions that you think are stupid.

In this case, might I suggest that you employ some manners and adhere to an old rule, but one worth mentioning..."If you cannot say something nice, then don't say anything at all."

As a former 12 year old, I take great umbrage at your second insult. I think that fostering a love for movies at a young age is a wonderful thing, and I welcome all questions from a that audience.

Elizabeth Taylor at 33 was physically stunning. Check out the portraits of her taken from the period of the film and just before esp. those taken by photographers, Richard Avedon and Cecil Beaton. That was the big shock for everyone -- how bad she looked in the film for the woman who was considered the most beautiful woman in the world at that time.

RIP, Elizabeth Taylor.

"At thirty-four she is an extremely beautiful woman, lavishly endowed by nature with a few flaws in the masterpiece: She has an insipid double chin, her legs are too short and she has a slight potbelly. She has a wonderful bosom, though."

"Elizabeth has great worries about becoming a cripple because her feet sometimes have no feeling in them. She asked if I would stop loving her if she had to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. I told her that I didn`t care if her legs, bum and bosoms fell off and her teeth turned yellow. And she went bald. I love that woman so much sometimes that I cannot believe my luck. She has given me so much."

'Nuff said.

Yeah they were definitely meant to be older than 34 and 40, in my mind. There was supposed to be a generation gap between the two couples, yet Sandy Dennis and George Segal are only a couple years younger than Liz in real life.

I would assume the couple of Martha and George was supposed to be in their late 40s-mid 50s.

reply

According to the play, IIRC Martha is 54 and George is 48. George even taunts her that he's younger than her.

In the mid 60s, many people who were 35 looked 50, as today many 50 year olds look 35. Watching the film I guessed George was supposed to be 42-43 and Martha 37-38. Actually I thought Liz looked kinda sexy in this film.

^That honestly surprises me. I assumed the two couples were at least 20+ years apart, Liz was sexy but by god to me she seems older than 37.

That's what they are, according to the play. Kudos to the makeup department for turning Liz Taylor into a mid-50s hot mother...

She looked hot. I lusted her during the entire film.

reply

It was latex make up they used on her face, she put on weight for the film but I think it gave her a luscious sexy look, preferred her with more curves in the 1960's than the slender hourglass she was in the early 50's.

reply

it was impossible to make Liz Taylor look not sexy whatever they did

reply

She's supposed to be playing it about about 45--a hard 45. That's as far as they could push it. The character was originally in her 50s. Taylor gained weight, wore the wig and had some pouches put under eyes. Still, she looks pretty sexy in that blouse and pants combo.

reply

She was supposed to look bad. Like a woman about 15 years older than her actual age.
