How did this win Best Costume Design???

Love the film, Taylor's finest hour- but I still am scratching my head at how this WON best black-and-white costume design, let alone nominated for it. There are 4 characters in the movie, and beside's Taylor's quick blouse change, I don't see anything special or innovative about the clothes- they were plain and rather boring; the performances outranked everything.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Good question. The only thing I can think of is that in those days make up and hairstyle was not a category of its own and might have been included in costume design. That said, Elizabeth Taylor was 32 playing 50s an she pulls it off nicely and relies a lot on her hair, that could be it.

Irene Sharraff. She was a heavy hitter in that department. Weak nominees too.

This was by far the biggest, most acclaimed movie of the five.

I agree. The team also did a great job making Sandy Dennis look plain, she is actually quite pretty.

Not a costume movie at all.. Irene is huge Hollywood .. She dressed Streisand in Funny Gurl for example/ so she pulls weight in the voting ... Have not looked at other movies nominated
