Hippies

Anyone know who the group of hippies were? This was filmed in 1966 before the hippie scene was well known. I think they might have been Vito and the Freaks, associated with Frank Zappa and the L.A. freak scene. Any ideas?

I always assumed these were just a bunch of revelers who held an annual bacchanalia and that this was the kind of thing about which people in the rest of the country would say, "Yeah, well, that's California for you."

reply

They were art of the Young DNC Organization.

reply

I think you're right, they appeared mainline Dems. I'm also sure if John Belushi had lived long enough he would now be a lauded senator; hell, why not? Al Franken thinks it's all a joke too.

reply

Opps, forgot that Rock was a Republican.

reply

Yeah, Republicans get AIDS too; hopefully not implying this disease has a moral component.

reply

No I wasn't kerchable. Sorry if you or anyone else felt that way.

IDK, some of them looked pretty old to me. But if true, at least they know how to partee! If it was cons they would be playing with their guns & shooting up the place or tearing up the place in their 4wds and ATVs. This crowd was better.

Vito, and Suzy Creamcheese!

great posting Jakealope, I think you nailed it. I've seen vintage film footage, think it's called The Hippie Temptation, and there was a story on Vito and Capt. *beep* ala Freaks and they looked like the same group. Zappa did hang out with these characters and made an impression on him. Excellent quote, thanks for the memories.

Do you mean Captain Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet? I love these IMDb boards, I get responses like from 7 year old posts.

Actually, California had a thriving, exploratory, counter-cultural scene since the mid-1950s. Bohemians, Beatniks, artists, progressive intellectuals, etc... In a sense, these folks laid down much of the "ground work" for the eventual "Hippy Movement." Part of it was a 'back to nature movement' as well.

reply

Well, before the hippie scene there was the beatnick scene. A lot of those guys had the beatnick goatee.

reply

There was always a thriving bohemian scene in California for decades before this film, and of course the Beats in California were the godfathers of the hippies.

reply

They did not act like hired extras.

I thought of DiCaprio in Once Upon...
