Most original fans love The Simpsons up to season 10, but I feel there are a bunch of good ones scattered up to season 15, but nothing really past that.
I read that this particular Tree House of Horror episode (20th season) was written years earlier but they didn't want to make it unless they could get rights to Vince Guaraldi's ubiquitous Peanuts specials piano music. Once they got music rights, they went ahead and produced this episode. This makes sense because Grand Pumpkin was as good as any early season Tree House special and almost seemed out of place with the later - far less funny and less unique episodes.
