Where did the idea of the Great Pumpkin come from?
Was it just something the writer's made up, or does it have a basis somewhere else?
shareCharles Schulz made it up. The Great Pumpkin had been a regular Halloween-season running gag in the Peanuts comic strip for several years before the special (in fact, many of the lines in the special are lifted straight from the strip). Schulz just thought it would be amusing to have Linus confuse certain aspects of Halloween and Christmas.
