I just watched this classic again on TV last night. After it was over, my girlfriend and I both remember some version where the Pumpkin shows up--or at least Linus is fooled into thinking that the GP shows up. We were both busy with other things while it was on, so maybe we missed it...?
Are we crazy? Did we both invent some false childhood memory?

Snoopy rises up in the pumpkin patch making Linus think it's the GP. Linus then faints, Snoopy runs off and Sally proceeds to scream at Linus for making her miss 'tricks or treats'.

I prefer to see it as the promise of redemption.
There was a skit on 'Robot Chicken,' where Linus does some strange ritual that conjures up the Great Pumpkin. However, the Great Pumpkin ends up killing him. Shortly thereafter, the Great Pumpkin goes on a killing spree, eliminating almost everyone except for Charlie Brown. As the Great Pumpkin closes in on Charlie, he finds he's actually in the vicinity of the Kite-Eating Tree, who destroys the Great Pumpkin.

There was another time on the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show where Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown went bowling at Halloween and Charlie Brown's ball went loose and rolled out to the pumpkin patch and knocked Linus down and he thought that was the Great Pumpkin too.
