I got a rock

Yeah I know it's part of the cartoon but what kind of parents/adults would give a kid a rock for Halloween & do they all grab one rock a few days before Halloween just to give to Charlie ?? If I were him I'd toss the rocks they gave me @ their cars !!

This is my favorite line in the show, lol. I know -anyone else would throw the rock at windows of the house or the car.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think I'd never get one !! :-D

I was 9 years old when I saw the original airing of it. Don't laugh (no, go ahead and laugh) but the repeated "I got a rock" at every house really irritated me. I thought it was stupid. And I had already read the corresponding strips in one of my "Peanuts" books. For some reason It didn't seem to bother me in the strips. Or, maybe it did and I don't remember, but I don't think so. Funny hazy memory.

When I was a kid way back when we would certainly get a "trick" now and then. At least once I got a small trick or treat bag with 4 or 5 little rocks in it. It was more common in the 1950's and 60's. That's why you say "trick or treat".

Do you think he wants some cheese?

I remember trick-or-treating as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s and one of the houses, playing up that they didn't have any candy left, joked about giving me a rock instead. Of course, they were stalling for time as they grabbed the candy bowl from the back.

I mean, of all the injustices heaped upon poor Charlie Brown over the years, the fact that the ADULTS of the community were handing out rocks to him and only him is probably the cruelest fate of them all.

It is absolutely cruel - but as satire on the "real" world (which is where Schulz was at his best), it's pure comic genius. My 4 year old thought it was hysterical. But, then again, people don't actually give out rocks- and there would be consequences if they did.
