I read a few comments that Eli Wallach would have been totally miscast as Davis Leland. I don't see that, I think he was doing fine. Could it be that people remember him (too much) from films like "The good, the bad and the ugly" and "The magnificent seven"?
(In HTSAM he does remind me somewhat of Silvio Berlusconi. Yuck! :-))

When Simon asks Nicole who the American is, I swore she said "David Lean".
David Lean directed Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia. I thought it was an in-joke in the script.

Character's name is "Leland." You heard it as "Lean" - pretty close.
Was the actor's diction flawed, or your hearing?
He was not miscast at all and never is.

As in everything he ever appeared in, Wallach was great in this small role. It's just unusual to see him playing a business man in a suit, which seems to disconcert some people.
