Missing original opening title?

Perhaps I'm crazy, but I seem to remember a short opening title sequence in the TV version that gave a little description of the land of Whoville, who the Whos were and THEN the title board appeared and we went into the first commercial break. After that, the show began with the opening lines, "All the Whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch..."

I remember this from the first few airings of the show from 1966 and a few more years, after which this opening no longer appeared.

Does anyone else old enough to remember the first airings of "The Grinch" recall this "missing opening" or am I imagining it all? It's been bugging me for years and, so far, I haven't been able to find any definitive answers.
