How did Angel Eyes become a sergeant in the Union army?

During the first quarter of the movie Angel Eyes is obviously a civilian, with no allegiance to either the Union or the Confederacy. However, when Tuco and Blondie arrive at the Union prison camp (called Batterville in the bonus footage), Angel Eyes is there, a sergeant in full military dress. In fact, he seems loyal to the Union cause. He even complains to his superior how the troops are being mistreated at Andersonville. Then when Angel Eyes and Blondie leave the camp for the hidden gold, no further mention of his military commission is made again.

So how did Angel Eyes got promoted from civilian to sergeant so fast? And how did he leave the prison camp without anyone from the Union army knowing?

may be he killed an officer and took his plase.

exactly, whatever it took

I think Angel Eyes was always a Union Sgt. He was just tracking down the gold and other various crimes on the side. His gang was made of soldiers who were guards at the POW camp. They covered for him when he was out and about, and when it was time for the big payoff, the gold, they all went AWOL. Covering for him would not be that hard since the Officer in charge was sick with gangrene, and it seemed that Angel Eyes was ranking NCO (and as we said when I was in the Army Officer might lead but NCOs run the military).

Nah, he was just a good con man, and outlaw, he waylaid some poor sap that was on his way to be the sergeant there, then set up that black market op while the real commander was dying, sinch. They didn't have photo IDs

reply

That's what I always assumed. He was just faking it.

But he WAs a colonel in a few dollars more...so he has some military ranking, whether or not he actually was a legit soldier who knows, it was easy to fake stuff back then

reply

He's Angel Eyes. He does what he wants.

They are two different characters. Col. Mortimer and Angel Eyes and Angel Eyes was killed.

That makes sense. But he must have been torturing soldiers there for a few weeks since the men said the band plays loud when he's handing out beatdowns

reply

Mythological characters defy logic. Remember, these men are part of "an ancient race"
