As cool as Clint is this movie it's Eli Wallach that steals all the scenes he is in and gives an incredible Oscar worthy performance.

The fact that Eli Wallach was overlooked for this; it reminds me of the ridiculous Oscar nominations in "The Naked Gun" sequel - 'a woman battling a severe yeast infection' or whatever. LOL
This ended up being the Tuco movie - The Man With No Name ended up being a co-star. Also, one couldn't help but feel a little bit of empathy/compassion for Tuco after his talk with his brother; and the viewer could see it reflected in 'Blondie's' face too since he eavesdropped on their angry exchange.
No one else in the history of acting could have nailed that role like tuco did...perhaps ..maybe...Bogart.
shareFinally saw this one just now. Excellent film in many respects, and certainly deserving of the praise and reputation it enjoys. As the #9 spot on the IMDB list, I'd guess maybe I'd say it's a tad overrated. It did have its problems, but nothing so wrong as to prevent me from enjoying it. Like all great movies, the good points are so good as to overwhelm any criticism.
All that said, the most consistent strong point of the film was DEFINITELY Eli Wallach. Powerhouse performance if I ever saw one. Absolutely loved his portrayal of Tuco from start to finish. Leone is without doubt a master of mood and suspense, but there were some scenes that almost took it too far, and came close to taking me out of the moment. But absolutely no part of Wallach's performance was less than stellar. Truly excellent.
Glad I finally saw this one. I'll surely see it again.

shareDefinitely bossed the film throughout - especially with such a diverse character: from the funny, goofball, to the sadistic, no nonsense, killer.
I particularly enjoyed his rant at Eastwood 16 minutes into the film: Eli is all tied up on the back of a horse and about to be served to the local sheriff. And all the time he is mouthing off to no one in particular!
His obscene rants were incredibly funny, especially "hey look, one b&&&&&d goes in; another b&&&&&d comes out", and "Yeah roll it up, roll it up! I'll give you a good idea where you can put it!"
