It's rather comic in 2015
Not because of the technology but the stupid moves of the characters.

Most people would 50% disagree with you.
Unforgiven is a benchmark for Eastwood but the Man with No Name/Dollars trilogy put him on the map. They're actually considered one of the first if not the first official trilogy saga. Most would consider The Good the Bad and the Ugly not only Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone's greatest film but also one of the greatest films/epics of all time. It's pretty much in every greatest films list from reputable sources. Also been listed more than a few times as the single greatest western of all time and introduced the anti-hero to that genre. In addition to that the composed music by Ennio Morricone has been voted one of the best film scores of all time.

I guess after so many decades of movies, it's hard to imagine what it was like when something like this first came out, as the first of it's kind, and how it changed everything. I was born in '80, but I grew up watching westerns, and started out on a lot of the older ones. To me, these "spaghetti westerns" were the most epic and made the biggest impression on me, and even now when I watch them, I just think they're so Bad A-- and cool and fun to watch. Nothing like this had come out before, and even afterwards, I don't think any could hold a candle to this movie. Everything about them, from the way they were shot, the story of the characters, the dirty sweaty landscape that was real and not just Hollywood magic, the close-ups of the eyes and the itching hands by the holsters, and the awesome score that elevated & punched up the entire experience. When one watches these films, you can't help but get sucked in, whole-heartedly and believe it all. You're not stopping to question someone's acting, or a camera shot or something, b/c it's that engrossing.
There are some great westerns, of course High Plains Drifter is great. And some feel like Unforgiven is the unspoken sequel to this movie, which is cool to think about and also a fantastic movie. But this is what started it all, and I just can't think of anything greater.

This trilogy didn't start the spaghetti western frenzy. On release, the films were panned by many critics and only in time have become classics.

And don't know why they would think its an unspoken sequel. In no way shape or form does it give you the impression that character from the leone films murdered women and children.
shareI have to agree with you. I was also born in 1980 and although I only saw these films recently, my father raised me to watch a lot of classic films like Ben Hur or The Godfather films.
What I also like about these trilogy despite it's highly elevated operatic style and drama is the entertaining fun aspect of it. The characters and their interactions/chemistry is fantastic.
And still, it comes across as realistic to me despite the sweeping score, beautiful shots and closeups, and operatic nature and characters.
