THE GREATEST FILM EVER MADE

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was the first western that I ever saw and it was a perfect introduction to the genre. I can tell you that I was very tempted to award it 10/10, something that I am yet to do. It seems as if almost everything about this film is absolutely perfect. The story is simple, three men search for gold, but the writers and director managed to build an entire epic adventure out of it, the three hour run time is no issue as Leone creates such an epic world, filled with amazing characters and breathtaking scenery. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach are all legendary and form the greatest leads in any film.
The photography - my god! This has the most beautiful, stunning cinematography of any film ever, those gorgeous wide shots of the landscapes and of course the tense, extreme close ups, pure genius. The final standoff is filmed with pure brilliance and is the best climax to any motion picture, after such build up it culminates in a purely epic standoff.
In my opinion, it is the music that is what makes this film truly great, I will have the gold theme playing at my funeral. The music is just so epic and expertly composed, true masterwork.
9.9/10 Wonderful

Nah, TCM just showed the trilogy and it's not even as good as For A Few Dollars More, let alone what I think is the best one in the trilogy, A Fistful of Dollars. One of the best aspects of A Fistful of Dollars is that it's the shortest of the three at 100 minutes, it gets to the point rather than meanders like this one does. By the time this came around, the style had become almost a cliche.

Agreed about the length. The hour or so of sappy civil war scenes could have been removed and it would still be too long.

Its a solid movie, well worth watching, but no where close to greatest movie ever.

I can't see the validity of even calling this the best western ever. Top 20 westerns I'd agree with, but many are better.

Whether its the greatest film is subjective to the viewer for me nothing even comes close to this masterpiece of cinema
even now with today's technology this film stands tall and still looks and sounds fantastic the production values where off the chart for a film made 50 years ago. I can't honestly say any film before or after had really mastered the art of combing both audio/visual like this film did
If you don't like the film that's fine but to deny it's production is absurd.

Watch these scenes on you tube.

watch the large chunk of debris almost kill Eastwood or I assume is his stunt man.

at the 1 minute mark watch how close Eli comes to losing his fingers.
No OHS officer on set.

Tell me that scene alone wasn't one of the greatest influences in cinema history ranging from Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino and even Metallica. QT employs Ennio Morricone for most of his productions.
Is this the best film ever made? subjective. Does it deserve a place among them whether you agree or not? without a doubt.
