Was it just a '60s Britain thing?

In the club scene near the end, almost everyone in the audience looks like a zombie. There are a couple at the rear of the crowd who are getting into the music and dancing, but everyone else looks so sedate, actually moribund would be a better word. Is this how audiences behaved at rock concerts in mid-60s Britain?? Like they were at a chamber orchestra performance?

Not all of what you see in this film is meant to be an accurate picture of London in the 1960s. Buildings are repainted and clothing is exaggerated, to give just two examples. So the zombie-like mode of the young audience at the pop concert is probably another of Antonioni's little jokes about modern urban life.

Maybe the scene was too show the culture of drugs which was big around the early 60s Purple Hearts and uppers and downers hence the zombie look
