View Films Through Their Own Time Period
I believe a film should be judged according to the time in which it was created. The reasons are numerous:
1. Technology, i.e. cameras, sound equipment, special effects, etc., have improved and/or came into existence over time.
2. The quality of color or black and white photography have both improved.
3. Rating systems have eased over time, allowing for easier accessibility to more complex and mature screenplays and therefore films.
4. Films have been able to tackle social issues that in the past were forbidden and ignored.
I am sure I am not thinking of all of the ways in which filming has changed - but this is a beginning.
Films of the 1930's could be fun, intense, and/or be magnificent, and occasionally might be relevant even today. Some of the best films, like 1931's "The Public Enemy" or 1934's "Of Human Bondage" should be looked at through the time in which they were made. Do those films the justice they deserve because they are brilliant. As usual, these are my opinions, and could differ widely from others. Please remember these are only my points of view.
