The episodes of this series in which Penguin goes up vs. Batman in a contest to be Mayor are the best political satire films ever made!
They do an utterly brilliant job of showing how the public wants nothing other than entertainment from its politicians and doesn't give a flying fig about any issues or hearing thoughtful & in-depth answers to any questions.
They are poignant because they are almost 100% true-to-life. The only thing a bit unrealistic about them is that Penguin and Batman both have outlandish costumes. But other than that, those episodes might as well be historical documentaries!
Seriously, those episodes should be inducted into the Television Hall of Fame (or whatever they call it) as examples of the best film art that humans can possibly make.

I just watched that episode for the first time in 25 years and I was shocked at how well the episode predicted the exact tactics that Trump used in this recent election. I mean, two little old white ladies said, "It's so refreshing for a politician to speak his mind." And, the Penguin kept calling Batman crooked. And the Penguin vowed to nominate fellow villains to his cabinet. Batman wanted to take the high road and stick to the issues and did poorly most of the way. He insisted that he didn't need to be splashy or sling mud because he trusted the voters.
The only difference, of course, is that in 2016, the super villain actually duped enough people that he won the race.
I am still just stunned at how well this episode predicted the future. Did Trump watch this episode and take notes?

Moreover, the episodes were inspired by Ronald Reagan's California gubernatorial campaign in 1966. In early 1985 I saw these episodes again after many years and was thunderstruck by how uncannily they echoed Reagan's Presidential re-election campaign a few months earlier. Even inspired by the same politician, so how could they not?
This past election, we had the Penguin's campaign mingled with the original Manchurian Candidate, with a candidate spewing a boatload of fire-brand rhetoric aimed at the simple-minded rabble, and maneuvered to win by a manipulative foreign power. But no Laurence Harvey.
That episode was kinda scary in a way, because if the Penguin won the election, he would have destroyed Gotham City forever for his own personal gain. I was so happy when Batman foiled his attempt at being mayor
