It was available from GOODTIMES HOME VIDEO a few years back. They licensed a number of titles from Universal. All those rights are up an Universal has released some of these titles already...but THE WAR LORD is not one of them yet. The DVD (if you can find it) is pretty good....and in letterbox. I believe they used Universal's original laserdisc transfer....
I just picked up a copy of the 3-disc letterboxed wide-screen laserdisc version for ~ $15. Same transfer used for the DVD release ('Got fed up waiting for several movies that had been released in LD but never in DVD, and bought a top-of-the-line used LD player last year...)
Today a DVD of this wonderful film has come out in Germany from Koch Media. They got the license from Universal. I've just looked at it, and it's an excellent anarmophic widescreen transfer (2.35:1), PAL/Region 2. :-) Though I haven't compared yet, as far as I remember, it's much better than NTSC/Region 1 letterboxed transfer.
EDIT: I just checked and compared both discs. The new transfer of the German PAL DVD is FAR superior to the old GoodTime Home Video release. So, if you can play Region 2 DVDs in PAL - get it! ;-)
I totally agree. I have just bought the DVD via e-bay for under £20 including postage to the UK. The image quality is nothing short of superb. Highly recommended.
I have just purchased the recent German DVD release of this movie entitled, "Die Normannen Kommen" and it is utterly magnificent. Never before have I seen the production in its original Panavision format. The film has been digitally remastered (superb colour rendition) with Dolby sound. This DVD has the English dialogue and a dubbed German language version. The original cinema trailer, with some narration by Charlton Heston, is also included. You can obtain it from amazon's German website (amazon.de) I paid 21.81 Euros (£16.22) including postage, packing and VAT for my copy. Get it now while stocks last!
Don't order this one from Joe's video. The copy I got had a glitch about 1/3 of the way in and wouldn't finish. Turns out all his copies had the same problem. He did refund my money.
I got a great copy on Amazon of a Portuguese release in NTSC region 1 format, in the original English for around $20. All titles, etc are in Portuguese.
