What's really stupid is the fact that he actually thinks that they'll need him after he steal the plane rather than need him dead.

Later, underwater, after his oxygen hose gets cut, I think that he reaches down between his legs for the ejection handle, but the ejector seat failed as well. As a matter of interest, there have been a few successful ejections under water, but not many.
