Thunderball or Never Say Never Again?

Which version of this story do you like better? Personally, I think NSNA is better

reply

In what way?
Im a Connery and Bond fan, so I wont argue or be terrible on you or so! But you can start pointing out in what way you prefer NSNA for TB?

reply

I think Largo is better in NSNA. Adolfo Celli is kind of bland, but the eyepatch is a nice touch. Luciana Paluzzi and Barbera Carrera are tough to pick between, though (as Fiona Volpe/Fatima Blush).

The underwater scenes don't drag on for too long in NSNA. However the scene when Bond plays cards with Largo in Thunderball is much better than that silly videogame he plays with him in NSNA.

I'd rank Connery's films like this

From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Dr No
You Only Live Twice
Never Say Never Again
Thunderball
Diamonds Are Forever

Thunderball is OK, but it wasn't as strong as the three ones before it, I think. Both Thunderball and NSNA are better than the mediocre DAF, though

reply

Thunderball. I like Celi much better as Largo than KMB. Though Barbara Carerra definitely rocks as Fatima.

I love to love my Lisa.

I honestly dont like comparing films. its too hard, too many things, too many aspects to view from. But I agree with Brandauer being a great actor, and displays an amusing amount of feelings when Connery do his usual sarcastic subtilities when chatting with him. Also, NSNA, which I think, suffers from unsuitable music and a rather weak and small finale, takes its strength from the actors and the scenes where Connery can show how great and funny he can be. And the rgeat fight with the giant on the clinic. Its not as bad as some think, and the film was recieved with many applauds from the Moore fed up, Connery hungry crowd, back in 1983.

But, all in all, Thunderball which suffers from its constantly slow pace, and editing problems, still has a huge amount of great scenes; the Bond hunt during the festival/All the scenes between Fiona and Bond/scenes w Domino and Bond, all great lines, and the wonderful mesmerizing music... Terence Young just gave up and threw the finished film rolls over to Peter Hunt to edit from his own head, and the director just went out the back door never to come back to the Bondworld again. I think Connery missed him alot after that. they were friends.

No one found the double speed action scenes in Thunderball laughable enough to make Never Say Never Again the clear winner?

reply

I'll go for the one that doesn't have Edward Fox overacting badly, doesn't have Rowan Atkinson in a pointless and cringingly unfunny appearance, doesn't fizzle out in a dull, confusing ending and, most of all, doesn't have a bland score that sounds like it's been lifted from some sixties "caper" movie (proves even the great Michel le Grand can get it wrong sometimes). I'll go for the one that has a cracking score, a belting theme that still gets sung nearly fifty years on (can anyone remember who sang the theme to NSNA, or hum a few bars?) and one an Oscar for the underwater photography

I hate Never say never again with a passion.

It just isn't bond, It's a B-movie rip off by that hack Kevin Mcclory. It took all the charm out of thunderball and replaced it with nothing..

reply

I thought NSNA was better than Octopussy. The latter just showed how far Roger Moore Bond has descended into camp by that point. It was also better than Diamonds are Forever as Connery's last film, by a long shot. It did feel quite low budget, compared to the Eon films though. The finale was kind of low budget and weak.

I have all Bond movies on DVD though, including NSNA (and the latest, Skyfall)

reply

The fans got to vote with their checkbook in 1983.

Octopussy took in more money than NSNA. It's a fact, you can look it up with box office mojo or any of the similar services on the WWW.

reply

Oh, Gawd....

Thunderball was the greatest Bond movie ever.

Never Say Never Again was the absolute worst Bond movie ever.

reply

Agreed

reply

Thunderball, hands down...it was "the biggest Bond of all."

reply

I think both films are good.

reply

Are you serious?
Thunderball was the best of all the Bond films.
Never Say Never Again was the worst of all the Bond films.

reply

Never say Never Again the worst Bond film??? Your insane! Have you seen The Man with the Golden Gun? or Die Another Day?

reply

I prefer Thunderball. NSNA seemed forced and exaggerated, like Sean was making his movie, not a James Bond movie.

she loved poetry and romance, but she hit the glass ceiling at birth

reply

John Barry's score alone makes Thunderball the better film. But beyond that, the classic feel of a Bond film is gone by the 1980s, for both NSNA AND Octopussy. They both just look like run-of-the-mill action movies by that point.

reply

Don't remember much about Octopussy, but I agree about NSNA, the movie didn't feel like the previous bond movies. And the score for NSNA missed it mark in my opinion.

If we can save humanity, we become the caretakers of the world

reply

Im actually shocked that anyone would fin NSNA a better film.. nuff said.

reply

Thunderball is clearly the better Bond film. What an odd question.

Interesting. You're afraid of insects and women. Ladybugs must render you catatonic.

reply

Never Say Never lacked one very important thing - in my opinion - the music. No Monte Norman Bond theme..

reply

Definitely Thunderball. It got all the benefits of being an official Bond entry that NSNA lacks(Opening gunbarrel, John Barry music, the regular MI6 office supporting cast, Maurice Binder titles, Ken Adams sets, etc.). Plus, it's Connery in his prime when the series was still relatively new and exciting.

reply

I've seen both multiple times and would always go with Thunderball, where you get the whole Bond package including music, song, stylized credits, and regular stars. On top of this I think Thunderball, even though made around 18 years earlier, is a better looking movie with all those great Bahamas/Caribean locations.
