Sydney Pollack

Is this Sydney Pollack's first feature film? I see by looking at his IMDB credits that before this picture he did a lot of episodic drama (including 10 episodes of Ben Casey!) this film looks like it could've been made for TV, does anyone know for sure? I think Sydney Pollack is one of our very best American directors, he's been working in film for almost fifty consecutive years. If his name appears in the credits it almost guarantees a high quality production.

I just watched this on TCM this weekend and Robert Osbourne stated that this was Sydney Pollack's first film. That was the theme of the evening.

"Darn that dream and bless it too.
Without that dream I'd never have you."

Sydney Pollack has just died two days ago after a long battle with cancer. A sad end to a long and distinguished Hollywood career that started with this film.

Amen to that. I have most of his films on DVD or seen in the cinema, this one I didn't know about and hard to get. Incredible that his first major filmproject got three major stars involved and Oscar-nominations. I like good writing, crafty design and production and a good feel within the actors ensemble. All of that is available in any Pollack movie. The man was a gem. He and the likes of Sidney Lumet, Ron Howard and Rob Reiner always produce better than mainstream quality movies that are always good to watch.
