the empty pineapple juice containers

When Selina was by her tree at night, waiting for Opah, she started whistling, yet she looked uncomfortable. There was a close up of the juice containers from earlier..Then she called to see if "anyone was around"---something didn't quite make sense in this scene, and then it hit me(this may seem indelicate). Poor Selina had to urinate and needed her privacy---she disappeared behind the tree. This scene was somehow very touching to me--she had to put up with so much, and here was a minor but still important inconvenience in her life. The next day Gordon whispered in her ear, after she declined the juice, about the ladies room in the park.

Thank you for that comment. Now that scene makes a lot more sense to me.

reply

Yes- thanks for the insight! I didn't quite get it I guess.

reply

I think it was nice that Gordon read her mind about needing to relieve herself after having the juice. He was so kind.

reply

Not only did he read her mind, but he expressed it ever so delicately. Great writing and delivery.

It's funny, I never picked up on the fact Selina might have gone 'wee' behind the tree - When I saw the empty containers, I just thought (with 21st century 'green' earth in mind) how terrible they were left there as litter!

‘Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).

reply

Well, just remember when you see a full container alongside the road: That ain't apple juice!

reply

Very good observation. I thought that was at night when the storm comes but I guess there was that first time when she is alone at night waiting for Ole Pa.
