Her mom, Rosanne, had some guy over and they were going to go at it. He said he didn't want Selina around so Rosanne left to find Ole Pa to "take her out" for awhile. When Rosanne left the apartment he locked the door and attacked Selina. Heartbreaking.
Nice!
shareYou know, I found that scene to be very risqué.
Especially for the time that the movie was made.

In what context do you mean that word drew?

They showed it from her point of view because she wasn't blind at that time. She's blinded later....and that's a heartbreaking scene too and it is shown from her point of view.
shareI'm pretty sure she was blind at the time. It happened after her mother threw the bottle at her to make her lose her sight.

I haven't seen the movie in quite awhile so you could be right. I thought she was blinded afterwards (in the fight scene) I'm a bit sketchy as to when didfferent things took place. I remember the details, just not necessarily in the proper order.

I know it's years later...But are you saying that heart breaking, despicable and awful rape scene...Was 'nice' in that you enjoyed her being raped (I hope not); or is it you think the way the scene was shot, and the way the actor's portrayed their roles was nice??!!
"OOhhhooo....I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"
Why did they show it from her POV even though she's blind?
Sometimes it's a good day to die, and sometimes it's a good day to have breakfast.
Yeah, I was wondering about that too.
shareThey show it from her POV because it was the last thing she saw. It was a flashback, and you "see" her losing her vision like a TV fades out.
shareWar-Ped- I beg to differ on your remembrance of this film. This movie I know through and through because I've seen it about a hundred times. She lost her vision when her mother threw the bottle that was meant for Harry. Harry, Selina's real dad walked in while Roseanne was having in one of her friends. Harry was in the war or something.. Rosanne threw the bottle. It was meant for Harry. The Bitch whore missed Harry and the bottle smashed against the wall over where the child was huddled on her little bed. Selena was five years old when she was blinded.
She was much older when she was raped by that other drunk pig Rosanne brought home..
Remember she told Gordon she had been "done over a while back"
I love that Jerry Goldsmith score
Hey Ya'll, Mama's Fryin' Taters!
Yes, you're right. She was blind when she was raped. I misunderstood the other person's question – I thought s/he was asking why they re-created the scene of her mother blinding her, not why they re-created the rape scene.
shareI don't really see how else they could have filmed the scene except from Selina's point of view (even though she couldn't see it). The scene was meant to express terror so it would be her reactions to the rapist that best convey that.

Selina was definitely blind when she was raped. She knows something is happening and probably knew what it was by listening to Rose Ann have her "fun." She knew that apartment by heart so knew where the key was for the door.
shareI thought it was interesting in that Selina described herself as being "experienced" because of the rape. More evidence of how deprived her existence was before meeting Gordon.
shareShe wasn't born blind. Many people who are born sighted and lose that sense often retain memories of what things look like. Doesn'r Selina at point say she remembers what "blue" looks like? She most likely still knew what that nasty apartment looked like. Chalk up the rest to "dramatic license."
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
In regard to the filming of the rape scene using Selina's "point of view", I believe it was simply artistic license on the part of the filmmaker-- to put the viewer in Selina's place.
Though she couldn't see her attacker, with her remaining senses heightened by her blindness, she certainly was aware of him and could visualize him in her own way. She could feel his hands gripping her, hear everything he was doing to her, smell his boozy breath in her face...
Movies are a visual medium... filming the rape in such a way was to make us feel it. So with that reasoning, I can accept how that scene was handled.
