Alternate Running Times

The original theatrical version ran 116m. The DVD runs 121m. When Cinemax first aired the film in the early 1980's, the sequence with Robert Morse and Barbra Nichols was totally new to me. Revival houses run the "short" version. Can anyone explain the discrepancy? Is there more footage that could be "added?"

The only explanation that I can think of is perhaps protection elements that were produced for the film were made before final cuts were made on the film.
