One Of The Darkest Comedies Ever....

This is a film that has got to be one of the darkest black comedies of all time.

This look at the funeral industry is a classic. An unbelievable farce.

Their crazy mortuary/funeral home scenes aren't that far from the truth, from what I understand.

The A&E series 'Family Plot' shows what the business today is REALLY about.

I wasn't sure what to think when I first saw it on cable TV years ago, but upon seeing it a second time (now on DVD) I appreciate its' subtle dry wit.

Rod Steiger as Mr. JoyBoy is so damned incredibly creepy, and his Mom's orgasmic delight over food is equally creepy.

Whew!

Robert Morse is a perfect choice as the lead. He is such a great comic actor, and I just love his work in 'How To Succeed In Business without Really Trying'.

All of the many cameo appearances are interesting as well. Liberace is perfect as Mr. Starker. You'll see what I mean if you haven't seen this film yet. I won't give anything about the story away.

Jonathan Winters' two roles are a very funny addition to the story.

Not everyone will appreciate this film, because it takes a love of the 'dark farce' type films to truly appreciate this one.

I haven't seen this in a donkey's age...is this the movie where the chick embalms herself alive?

I saw the movie when it was released. I thought, and think, that the only wrong note is Robert Morse. He's supposed to be English, John Gielgud's nephew. But, as is often the case, someone who is hot gets parts he or she is not suited for because the producers figure more people will come to see a show with a star. To put the movie in the context of its time, the casting of Jonathan Winters and Rod Steiger was inspired. Up to that time, Winters was basically a stand up comedian. This movie was his first dramatic role that I am aware of and the unexpected surprise of seeing him added to my enjoyment of his performances. The casting of Steiger as Mr. Joyboy was a jaw dropper. What was Steiger known for? Gangster roles. He played Marlon Brando's mobbed up brother in On the Waterfront and he was best known for playing Al Capone. When Mr. Joyboy minced on the scene, you did a double take. Just the concept was funny.

So, if not Morse, who should have played the hero? How about Michael Caine?
