Inspiration of this movie?

I was recently reading some information about the Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial cemetary in Burbank.... I was reading about the fake mystic "Criswell" who appears in a lot of Ed Wood's movies and is buried there. Then by chance, I happened to be attending a film convention near there in Burbank, so I decided to bring Criswell some flowers. Now as I was reading about the cemetary, a lot of details about it reminded me of the movie "The Loved One." This is all from wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt, but see if this doesn't ring a bell for you too:

"But just five months after the dedication, Osborne and Fitzpatrick were convicted of fraud. They had sold the same burial plots repeatedly--as many as 16 times--and netted a profit of $3 million to $4 million, according to Los Angeles Times stories of the era. They were fined $12,000 each and sentenced to 10 years in prison but served less than half the sentence."

Also if you look at the pictures, there's a whole shrine there for aviation pioneers, and a lot of famous pilots and astronauts are buried there. So there's a connection to the aeronautics industry.

Could be just a shot in the dark, but I wonder if the writers had heard about some of this stuff and decided to embellish it and satirize it?

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

The original novel by Evelyn Waugh was heavily inspired by the writer's trip to Hollywood. Forrest Lawn in particular was cited was Waugh's inspiration.

The Loved One was a 1948 novel. Jessica Mitford's 1963 book, the American Way of Death, may have been the actual catalyst.
