Interestingly the type of aircraft featured in the film (Fairchild C-82 Packet) never used a Coffman starter. In the original novel the aircraft was a fictional type called a "Salmon-Rees Skytruck" which had liquid cooled engines with Coffman starters. In the film Frank Towns once refers to the plane as a "Skytruck".

A conventional starter requires electrical power. We have to assume the batteries needed to start this aircraft had no charge left.

If indeed it had an electrical system. I suppose in the days before APUs a coffman starter with magneto ignition would keep it simple, an engine of such huge capacity would need a seriously huge and heavy starter and batteries
