How about Roman Polanski?

Would have loved to see Roman Polanski's approach to this film. I bet he would make it even better and creepier.

Yeah, Wyler´s direction necessarily wasn´t all it could have been. In all likelihood, Polanski would have been a better fit.

The movie was scary and creepy enough for me; more would probably have been too much.

It actually did feel a little like a Polanski film.

Here's a clue to Wyler's approach: he told Terrence Stamp, "Don't tell Samantha (Eggar), but we're making a love story".

Yeah, as good as this film was, I felt like it was mainly the script and the actors who carried it. Wyler's direction was fine but it did have a very old-school, stage like feel to it. Someone like Roman Polanski, Alfred Hitchcock, or even Stanley Kubrick, could've probably given it a rougher, dirtier feel.
