Miss Eggar's recollection on filming The Collector

An all-revealing interview with the lovely Samantha Eggar, where she discusses her off-screen relationship with Terence Stamp. (Where life imitates art, perhaps?).

You stupid, clumsy labouring-boy.

Even though Samantha Eggar was unhappy with Stamp's cold treatment of her during filming, she couldn't have known that he was simply following Wyler's instructions and staying in character. Stamp later said, "All the guys had crushes on her, she was so beautiful... I had a crush on her, too, and I was friendly with her. But when we started the movie, Willy said, 'I don't want you to have anything to do with her.' He wanted me to withdraw any friendship. He didn't want her to have anywhere to go or anyone to talk to, except her coach. He didn't want her to be able to come to me in the evening and say, 'God, it's so awful.'"

I believe this was revealed in an interview on TCM website.

I wonder if modern directors are still able to manipulate their actors like they did in the old days. Some of them were downright sadistic! Of course, you have to be a controlling sob to be a director in the first place!

Ssssshh! You'll wake up the monkey!

This does seem extreme (but not cruel) although it appeared to work very well. I have heard of other top-notch directors who used (what some might call cruel) techniques to achieve the desired effect.

Thank you.

That's funny. The way she addressed the rumor about turning down Terrence Stamp sounded like it was probably true.

Liked that interview, and very informative it was. The film's always intrigued me, so it was definitely worth hearing.

It's definitely done. And the most recent one I can think of is The Martian, where Matt Damon was really isolated from the other actors. I don't want to spoil the exact moment, but Matt Damon says a scene became overwhelmingly emotional for him because of his long separation from the crew (he couldn't joke or hang around them).

Ridley Scott was either sadistic here or a complete genius.

Even if the director is cruel at the end of the day the actor makes the decision and can say "This is fucked up, I'm not doing it". There are some exceptions like Last Tango in Paris which sounded more like rape and the actress had no idea what was coming.
