I know this post is like ancient history at this point, but the girl who gets her top ripped off is Buster Keaton's female sidekick, for lack of a better term, in the movie. She is not a main character; in fact, she does not even have any dialogue. (But I'll agree - total babe! They just don't make women like that anymore.)
Yes, the opening scene is quite saccharine, and you would probably find the rest of the film to be so as well. But it IS worth a watch if you're in the mood for some mindless entertainment. I think if I saw this film for the first time as an adult, I would probably have the same opinion as you. Lucky for me, I was introduced to it as a young girl, a young girl who was veritably obsessed with movies of the same and similar genres, and watch it now wistfully!
