Don Rickles ad-lib

The part where Don Rickles is joking around in the dance area with all the surfers and straight men like Lynde, sitting at tables watching, had to be ad-libbed. Watch the faces because they don't know what will be comming next and Annette is laughing a genuine laugh as is Bonehead and others. It was when he kinda slapped Frankie and was ribbing him a little. The director must have let Don do his thing and then get the real reaction from all in the room.

You're absolutely right! This was an absolute highlight in the film. It adds with the humor of the movie, though in a different direction. I've always been an admirer of Rickles....and as this film was from 1965, I can see his act doesn't change much! It wasn't scripted (Rickles' particular brand of humor doesn't need it) and looks fresh and genuine on screen. Good comment by you!

i'm still laughing at someone referring to P Lynde as the "straight man"

Paul Lynde was in several of these beach and surfing movies.

Yeah I was watching in again last night and that has to be improvised. The delivery is natural as well as the reaction. Definitely one of my favorite parts of the film since it was a hilarious routine.
