Is it me or are films like this sorely missing today?

Films that are notoriously visceral, and still somewhat radical, and still gather great deal of success in terms of moneymaking and critical review, seem to be more lacking these days.

They're there if you know where to look. The most recent one, for example, is Joel & Ethan Coen's No Country For Old Men (2007).

Another one would be Chan-Wook Park's OldBoy. Actually, you could check out Park's Revenge Trilogy, they all fit your criteria.

How about Ken Loach's "The Wind that Shakes the Barley"?

Did you see CARLOS or THE BAADER-MEINHOF COMPLEX? Those films managed to reach similar heights for me, as did VALLANZASCA (an amazing film!), ROBERTO SUCCO, MESRINE, Audiard's A PROPHET and Michele Soavi's UNO BIANCA.

CITY OF GOD and the ELITE SQUAD films fit the bill too.

The Baader-Meinhoff Complex comes pretty close in style, content and quality, though its far more ambivalent about its terrorist-protagonists. Soderbergh's Che tried but failed miserably IMO. Outside the Law also addresses the Algerian War but comes off more as The Godfather in Paris.

I agree with the others who mentioned The Baader-Meinhof Complex. I kept thinking about that movie throughout watching this one.
