I Dream of Jeannie vs Bewitched

Which was the better show and resonates with the generations from its inception.

To me its Jeannie. Still funny to me. Whenever I see Bewitched its just okay.

I think they are both good in different ways. As a child I LOVED I Dream of Jeannie much more just b/c it was so colorful and cartoony and I found Bewitched to be a little bit boring. BUT as an adult, I've come to appreciate Bewitched more than I did.

Seems like Bewitched was more about Samantha saving the day from her crazy relatives. Jeanie was more about Major Nelson maintaining normalcy.

Larry Hagman really played the straight man good. Also IDOJ seems less dated to my eyes. Even though Its been in reruns since I was a kid. I have the DVD's so its all good to me.

reply

My vote goes for I Dream of Jeannie and it's not even close. I agree with a previous comment he said it seems less dated. I also think it treats women better. Even though Genie was supposed to have been a servant and called Tony master she seem to be less subservient that Samantha was in many ways.

'IDoJ' >>> 'Bewitched'.

Some say that 'IDoJ' was more childish than 'Bewitched', but I disagree. 'Bewitched' was more childish since you had those fairy-tale book episodes because of Tabitha. I don't find 'IDoJ' at all childish, but I do 'Bewitched'.

I'll let you know when I come-up with a new signature, .

I prefer "I Dream of Jeannie" as well.

reply

Good, but which show do you think is more childish?

I would say Bewitched was more childish.

Agreed. "Bewitched" also had things like the loch ness monster, the tooth fairy, a werewolf, martians, leprachuans, hansel and Gretel, and jack in the beanstalk.

Also, toys coming to life. Darrin also grew huge ears and turned into a wicked witch.

Those things were more like folklore, and in a universe where mythological humans are real, then it makes sense.

To me what makes IDOJ cartoonish was mainly the outfits that Jeannie and her sister wore, almost like a dress up party, and I thought that was super cool, that's what attracted me to the show.

Jeannie was the better show. Why? 1: Barbara Eden better looking then Elizabeth Montgomery. 2: Much better chemistry with Jeannie and Tony then Elizabeth and Darren ( especially after Dick York left). 3: Dr. Bellows was" f z. Ztrz a much better foil then Larry Tate. Not just because he was smarter but because on occasion he did good for Tony, which Larry never did for Darren ( which makes him a more layered and interesting character).

I have the exact same reactions to these shows as you do, although I didn't like the first season of Jeannie as much, especially with Barbara Eden's more serious makeup and the much less fun theme and incidental music. I would watch Bewitched if I had nothing else to do, but if I had a choice, it would be Jeannie all the way. Hagman was a much better actor than either of the Dicks, especially with his talent for physical comedy. In terms of supporting characters, a sidekick like Major Healey was much better than Endora, the trouble-making mother-in-law. As a loyal buddy, he was able to get involved in many of Tony's schemes. Darren didn't seem to have any close friends. The kids in Bewitched were kind of annoying, too, especially since the child actors weren't very good.

Other smaller factors include that I much preferred the Nelson house interior to the Stevens house. And it's always good to see those establishing shots of the old NASA facilities, like the Dryden Flight Research Center. They've changed over the years, whether replaced, expanded, renamed, renovated, etc., but they'll always remain in their 1960s form to me whenever I watch the show.

reply

You're right - Darren never had anyone he could share his wife's secret with, so it was always him against everyone else. You can't really count Dick Wilson, either (the perennial drunk at the bar)!

reply

Yeah, it really is much better when you can have someone backing you up. Roger was usually trying to help Tony out of situations. Except when he was out for himself, of course.

reply

I DREAM OF JEANNIE was much more consistent. At it's best, BEWITCHED was better, but at its worst, BEWITCHED was far worse. The last three seasons of BEWITCHED were horrendous. JEANNIE maintained it's level of comedy.
