2 questions (a little scientific)

1) why did they need the sand be the woman's house for construction? THere was something about the sand having salt in it or something like that, and I know that isnt good for construction....
why did they need that sand when there was a whole desert around them? what was so special about the stuff that the main characters dug for them? was there some kind of geographical reason the stuff falling down the hill was better for them to have? Were they grifting some one? why do this? why not just sekk whoever regular sand?

2)The Woman also mentioned that it was important to keep her home dug out, because if her house went under the next house would be in trouble. Does it stand to reason from this that there was more village downhill from her...? I mean, the film gives the impression that the area is completely surrounded by steep slopes. But if they are in a bowl shape why would her house have any relation to the rest of the village? And if they arent in a bowl shape why didnt he just escape in the other direction?

I thought that the reasons given for shovelling the sand were deliberately non-sensical.

If you read the novel, near the end, the woman did mention that the villagers sell the sand to factories and construction companies at half price. They are forced labors.

Also, the man told the woman what he saw during his failed escape attempt where he noticed about 10 similar sandpit households and some of them have rope ladders.
