Why didn't his character ever come back? I liked him, I thought that him and Peter played off each other really well...Too bad...

Cleuseau upon leaving the police station he calls the man at the typewriting desk, "Hercule" Cleuseau gets into an elevater Just as the fire sprinkler system comes on.
Your right he does, but it might just be a coincidence that they both have the same name. It might not be the same character. Do you know if it was meant to be? Because the actor who plays Hercule in A shot in the dark plays Proff. Balls in Revenge...So if that Hercule was meant to be the same Hercule as Shot in the dark why didn't he play himself?
