I love the first 5 a lot; trail, curse and son sucked, as do the remakes
shareThe first half of the first movie is excruciating to watch, particularly when Sellers is not on screen. David Niven always bored me to tears. The second movie was much, much better.
shareAll the ones with Sellers ranged from good to brilliant. I honesty do not understand why everyone hates the first one, I thought it was just as hilarious as the other ones ( in a different manner).
shareI don't hate The Pink Panther, but it is clearly a vehicle for David Niven, Clouseau is just a bumbling backdrop for the plot. A Shot In The Dark is the best of the Clouseau movies because it is the one where he is believable, a klutz who is lucky, and inspired. After this one, the rest are just vehicles for pratfall comedy, with little regard for plot or character. Keystone Kops in France.
shareMuch enjoy the early ones. From comments it seems tastes for comedy are of all sorts. Love/hate. Then again people's moods change over time. Edwards as well as Sellers had fun well in hand. Can't think of any group efforts like this today. Maybe Austin Powers series gets close to the form. There's the Wagner, Niven father son routine done in Powers. Even a touch of Bondisms here or there in Panther series for the fans.
Watching The Curse of the Pink Panther now which gets fierce no nos. Edwards throws in some bits that would be more contemporary for the audience back then like the drunk playboy routine at beginning. Then a sort of neo-Mafia godfather setting outdoors around a big long table.
Arthur, and Godfather mined that same concept/look later years.
Curse has a few built in 'goofs' for sport. Like one where eyeglass lens falls out. Plops into guy's hand. Then as he exits the visit both lenses are back.
Niven says something about "as soon as he gets his glasses fixed". Cracked me up since clearly light was reflecting off both lenses in the sunlight. You know they could have either corrected for that, or was a side joke to see who was paying attention visually not just verbally.
Still, enjoy humor where you can find it. Not enough in this hard world.
My parents watched these a lot when I was a kid so when I see them that's what it reminds me of and I enjoyed them more then then I do now.
shareLay off the caffeine, will ya?
Saying 'The Pink Panther movies are great' (with or without exclamation points) would be like saying 'Food is great!'.
There is good food and bad food. There are mediocre meals, well-prepared cuisine, there are healthy snacks and unhealthy junk food and so on and so forth. One could describe different foods for days and not have enough time to explain everything about food and varieties of food.
The same goes with these movies; some movies are passable, some are OK, some are bad, some are HORRIBLE, some are bad for completely different reason, and so on and so forth.
Then there are the.. no pun intended.. GEMS.
If you think all the movies are great, you are someone who would think all food is the same. Surely you must understand the fallacy of such a viewpoint..
