Why wasn't Hermey in the sequels?

He and Rudolph seem to be best buds, so I'm curious as to why Hermey wasn't featured in Shiny New Year, or Christmas In July.

I always figured he was busy being the dentist because they hadn't had one ever up there. Imagine the teeth!

Hermey may have claim to have wanted to be a dentist, but it's obvious that his real passion was to be a chorus boy!
