1) Didnt get y the mask wudnt come off? And y was the old woman blaming the rains? Do we just dream or assume the mask to be cursed?
2) Y did the young lady start running towards the hole? maybe i missed on sumthing but y did the movie end abruptly? DiD the old woman make it or landed up in the hole?
Otherwise it was fun watchin the movie....

Hello demonseed18

I'd recommend this movie with subtitles 'cause all of the dialogs are great.

1) The reason why the mask didn't come off is - due to rain it gets wet and becomes so tight that old woman just can't took it off(she thinks it's a curse).

2) When mask was finally gets off the young girl gets frightened and starts running. And she chooses to run through the backdoor of their house and it leads straight to 'The Hole'.
I think the old woman makes it in the end. Because after jumping it wasn't shown that old woman fall into the hole. Also when she completes her jump the movement of her body stops(final moment) which indicates reaching to the other side of the hole but I'm not absolutely sure.

LOGIC IS NOT TRUTH.

"y did the movie end abruptly?"

Onibaba is an artistic film, and the ending is simply open for interpretation.

I think it's implied that the old woman didn't make the jump and fell to her death, sort of a karmic comeuppance.

Then again, what makes this movie so great is that so much is left to the viewers' interpretation.

Yeah, the ending's pretty open, but I figured the old woman slipped and fell into the hole or something and the young woman was left alone (since her lover is dead) and those were their individual punishments. However, if the old woman made the jump I would be interested to know how long they were running.

It's such a great film and I love the way it just ends abruptly.

Does she make it? I think ultimately it doesn't matter. Pretty much, she's stuck in a hole even if she doesn't fall down and end up stuck in a hole. Heavy on the existentialist thought of human helplessness this one. People just can't escape the grim fate, a bit like Kurosawa's Ran.

There are a few theories. The first being karma and the mention fo the rain suggests that 'nature' is punishing her. The woman is being punished for her selfishness, her jealousy, her possessiveness of her daughter-in-law, the murders she has committed etc. SHe has 'become'/been bonded to the demon and her real self is obstructed. Upon the removal of the mask where she is disfigured we also she (in visual representation) has been corrupted and consumed by her own wrong-doing. Maybe it is worthy to note that revenge is a big theme in asian cinema.

It could also be assumed The mask is cursed. The Samurai who wore it originally was also disfigured beneath the mask. Many theories suggest Shindo used Onibaba as a metaphor for both communism (peasants rising against the elite/upper classes eg samurais) and the Japanese participation in WW2/Hiroshima etc. The smurai too is corrupted because he is participating in the act of war. The mask symbolises status and power (in terms of social class and miltary rank) and its effect implies that what it stands for is ugly and corrupt - hence the disfigurement.

Shindo also reportedly used the disfigurement as a metaphor for the 'hibakusha' - victims of Hiroshima and based the makeup on their disfigurements which suggests both the mother and the samurai are also 'victims'. Victims of war, victims of abuse of power, victims of the past etc. and will never be the same again.

I also remember something linked with the actual mask itself/the mythology in relation to women who have been wronged, but I've forgotton it.

As for the hole, well its probably just to round off the story due to the fact she chucked so many Samurai's down there, and there she is wearing a samurai mask - falling intothe hole. Irony.
